It's entirely possible to complete this quest (save Gwydian) without initiating the fight with the extremely annoying voidwoken blobs.
Here's my recipe: position all party members except your main near the tent where Quartermaster Anna is located. Then, using ONLY your main character, climb the rig and teleport both the main Magister and the Magister Knight as close to the area where your other party members are and then use a jump spell (like Cloak & Dagger) to join them and kill those two magisters (the magisters will turn hostile after being teleported). The voidwoken will not spawn as long as you do NOT approach the wooden rig with any of your party members after the magisters turn hostile (keep them all around the the Quartermaster tent area).
Meanwhile, Gywdian and the Magister Ranger will be fighting each other back on the rig. Gywdian will defeat the ranger on his own and then run back to the camp where the family members are waiting. No mess, no fuss trying to save him from self-destructing.

No XP/loot for killing him after you get the XP reward for saving him (got it when he got back to his family a that stands before his fight)

After level 12, I managed to pick up several hydro + items. It should be easy enough for a character to slot cryogenic status. FF torturer entangle and soul mate w/ necro (haven't tested sm on npcs) are a couple other ideas not listed so far for keeping him out of harm's way.

i'd imagine gwydian AI is something along the lines of
if __alive__ == '__necessarysteps1__':
list necessarysteps1
:
-walk towards furthest enemy;
-if possible path into necrofire;
-walk out of AoE buffs;
-drop all spells on cooldown;
-don't touch crowd control spells;
god damn hell, i hate this nitwit and all things considered that mission is a pain in the ass (you need to alt+tab to even talk to the lizard), at least i have no serious business with his lizard mommy so stole from and killed her right after gwydian commited suicide.
Protip:Do all other source missions except this one if you don't have a dedicated support just to keep Gwyd's sorry ass afloat , trust me random scroller

It took just about everything I had playing Lone Wolf duo on Tactician, but I managed to save Gwydian's sorry ass despite his repeated attempts to commit suicide and even attacking my main character a couple of times. After the battle, he returned to the family, and I completed the quest by talking with him and received the reward. Then I sent him to the Hall of Echoes for being such a pain in the ass to keep alive. LMAO.

Managed to save Gwydian, but we lost Sir Lora. They both kept running around the fire.. I made the difficult decision of using my only first aid on Gwydian.. He barely made it out alive.. Sadly. Lora burned himself to death.. Rest in peace crazy squirrel..

cannot beat it at all, even after teleporting him, the voidwoken still appear and his dumb brain decides to kill himself constantly. i have been determined to do absolutely everything but i think this ones beaten me :(

Odd. I ended up teleporting him from his noose to a location close to the gate towards his home. And it teleported him out of the fight and the fight for me didn't start. Didn't have to fight anyone. This was after I tried everything else listed here and couldn't do it. I am running solo huntsman with farout man. (not sure if that made a difference)

start the dialog with the main magister. and attack the other ones with your other characters. after killing them, teleport the main magister as far out as you can. this will start the battle with him but wont summon the void. after killing him, Gwydian will run to his family like normal. Hope it works out for you all like it did me, and it wasnt just a glitch

To save Gwydian Rince from his suicidal urges, I recommend to prepare a prison for him using a combination of terrain and wooden crates. Teleport him into his new prison as soon as the oily blobs appear. Be sure to use reinforced crates only (they can be conveniently found down the secret hatch nearby). They have over 6000 HP, so it will take him forever trying to break free (and to kill himself in necrofire).

I just realized I bothered saving him for no reason since I reloaded after getting the Furious Rebuke achievement... oops.

Worst fight in the game, and most annoying NPC to save. You got to TP him away or heal him through all the damage he's gonna take, so TP'ing is the way to go.

Easiest way to kill him is to get up on the platform just below his, teleport him into the tent near Anna the Quartermaster. Kill the 3 magisters before he can run over there and the Voidwoken wont show up. If he makes it back over there and casts chain lightning, shes all over boys.
