I'm in Reapers Coast, at the Blackpits, and there are shriekers guarding somewhere I need to go, but my purging Wan is out of charges. What should I do?
You can get two purging wands. One from the lady in the camp. The other from the cave south east, protected by lizards.

Unless you don't care about refilling your wands, make sure to save Gratiana. She can refill wands if you can pass a persuasion check.

I am not sure i understand this, lore wise. When Orivand purges a sourcerer, said sourcerer turns into a Silent Monk. When you purge a shrieker, this kills him (in this case, i believe it is because the source had already been purged from him, but then without the source power, where does the shriek's power come from?). When you use the purging wand on a corpse, it explodes and gives source even if the target was not a sourcerer (last time i tested). If you use a purge wand in combat, it merely drains a source point from the target, which doesn't become a silent monk or explode.
The consequences for being purged are inconsistent, to say the least. A clue to explain this, anyone? Or is it merely all about convenient mechanics for the sake of gameplay?
