Notes and Tips

  • Range: 13m.
  • The encounter with the black cat when approaching Fort Joy is unavoidable. It will follow the character even in stealth or invisibility.
  • Being the first to step into its range does not guarantee the cat will follow you; it will randomly choose among all player characters in the party. The cat seems to have a preference for the Red Prince if you recruited him in the party.
  • The skill will only be given to the character the cat is following.
  • The skill will be given once the cat speaks to the players while outside Fort Joy.

We were searching around the place for loot after a fight when the cat walked into a puddle of fire & promptly died there was shouting, tears & swearing when we realised the last save was ages ago... On the bright side made the party a lovely supper around the camp fire that night form some "ingredients" that were laying about~

the upgrade works, After meeting judge orivand, my black cat say thank you and for reuniting and sending his former master to death. Now without lingering thought he is ready to help our entire group. You can swap the cat with anyone now.

If anyone doesn't yet know, there is a very easy way to save the cat. When coming to Fort Joy, do NOT trigger the Atusa event by going in through the front gate. Instead, take the ladder to the right of the front gate up into the Fort, the cat will wait there forever if you don't walk near her again. You can clear Fort Joy and continue to the marshes, she will teleport to the beach (where you would arrive if you took Hans boat) and will greet you there.

I wonder why people think Orivand is the Cat's owner.

The fact that his owner is a Rhyming Wizard clearly suggests that goddamn Bellegar is the cat's old owner XD

On a forum someone stated to have tweeted the founder of Larian Studios about the "upgrade swap skill" issue. The answer was that there is no such thing, I still tried to check it for myself but nothing happened.

so is it worth going back to start of the town and redo what i have done to keep the cat alive? b/c one of the guards killed the cat.

I had this on Red Prince on my first play through while I was playing a summoner. Despite this I remember it hitting fairly hard, around 20 damage. On my second play through I have no summoner and it totally sucks. It hits for half the damage and dies in two hits. I suspect the cats stats are based on your main character regardless of who actually gets the skill.

To whoever thinks it's better to have this skill on your summoner because the cat scales on summoning:
This is not a good idea. You can only have one summon at a time, and the cat is only useful for mobility purpose, so you will never use it. It's better to have it on a character that does not have access to mobility spell for repositioning, scaling does not matter.

From someone who started Fort Joy again just to have the cat on the summoner..

How does the upgrade for swap places work? I confronted Orivand with the cat summoned in my level 5 party and nothing happened. I won the fight and the skill was the same afterwards as before.

my character is sebille, the cat follows sebille through the entirety of act 1, as soon as i escape the fort it chooses red prince, i reloaded about 50 times to try get the cat to pick someone else, but it only picks red prince, larian dropped the ball on this one, now i have a useless cat summon on my warfare tank. would it have been so hard for the cat to drop an item (like its collar or something) or skillbook that teaches you to summon it rather than have it choose someone in the party at random? hopefully there is a mod to fix this obvious oversight.

Cat will randomly select someone if you play multi player so save and just reload till someone who wants it gets it.

Anyone had the cat die after summoning it? does it just dissapear to be summon again or do you need a resurrection scroll?

The cats teleport skill is broken for me.. its supposed to swap places with you in combat.. the skill activates but never swaps place with my character..

                                      For those looking to determine who gets the skill;

The Black Cat awards the skill to whoever it decides to follow when it first appears. You can determine who it chose to follow by dialogue, the person will typically announce their surprise at the cat.
The Black Cat seems to default to choosing the Red Prince to follow if he's in your party, even if he's not currently around. If you wish to keep the skill for yourself, hold off on recruiting the Red Prince until after you meet the cat.
